The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, is one of the latest tracks that F1 has raced at in the Middle East. Ever since it's debut in 2021, the race track has been able to provide a lot of racing action. It's long straights and fast corners has proven the circuit to be one of the fastest street circuits on the calendar.

Saudi Arabia Grand Prix
There have been rumors of Formula One hosting in Saudi Arabia, as the sport wanted to continue its influence across the Middle East. After F1's recent success in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi, the sport had eyes on two countries in the Middle East, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Eventually, they chose to race in both countries in the 2021 season. They already choose their venue in Qatar, to race at the Lusail International Circuit which didn't really need more constructing as the track was already built in 2004 for MotoGP. However, F1 needed to construct a brand new track for the Saudi Arabia GP. They choose to host their first Saudi Arabian GP at the coast of Jeddah. The designer of the Jeddah Corniche Circuit is Carsten Tilke, son of famed circuit designer Hermann Tilke.

Turn 13 just completed (2021)
Unfortunately, the construction of the Jeddah Corniche circuit hasn't all been smooth sailing. The project only took a little over seven months to complete. The shortest F1 construction till this day. The construction was nearly a disaster, due to natural disasters, trade disputes and the spread of the COVID-19 virus that was still relevant all over the country, with lead to a lot of delays in it's construction. The most crucial part of the track is the Pit Building. If it wasn't complete, then F1 would have to cancel the Grand Prix. But luckily, the teams on the ground managed to complete the construction in just a shy of 2 days, before race weekend. A few journalists believed that the recently paved tarmac and asphalt, might make the racing complicated. Because of the rushed project, not a lot of sponsors were placed on the run-off areas on the track.

But the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, was ready for Formula One. A few drivers had difficulties of adjusting to the new circuit during the practice sessions, as it's unique layout provides a lot of high speed corners for the drivers to master. But when the race came by, it became one of the most dramatic Grand Prix races during the 2021 season. The 2021 FIA Formula One World Championship featured the intense rivalry of Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen. Because the Saudi Arabian GP is right before the Abu Dhabi GP, the title decider and final race of the season, the pressure for both drivers was high. Hamilton and Verstappen were separated by only 8 and a half points. If one of the two wins the Saudi Arabian GP, then they'll most likely become the World Champion.

Chaotic Restart (2021 Saudi Arabia GP)
The Grand Prix was so dramatic, that the session ended up having 2 red flagged sessions. The first red-flag was due to Haas driver Mick Schumacher, crashing on the opening lap. The second red-flag session happened when Red Bull driver, Sergio Pérez crashed during the opening lap at the straight after Turn 3. But during lap 37, Verstappen made an overtake on Hamilton, however he went pass track limits, and the FIA Stewarts ordered Red Bull, to tell Verstappen to return the place back to Hamilton. But during the process of returning the position, Verstappen slowed down, so that Hamilton could overtake him. However, both cars had contact as Hamilton's car hit the left rear Tyre of Verstappen's Red Bull. Hamilton's front wing got damaged after the collision, but managed to keep going despite having a damaged front wing. Both drivers were heavily under investigation by the FIA due to their incident on the track. Verstappen would later return the place back to Hamilton but, would eventually get overtaken by Hamilton once again on lap 43. Hamilton would later win the first Saudi Arabia GP, followed by Verstappen in 2nd and a shocking 3rd place finish for Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas, after managing to overtake Alpine's Esteban Ocon on the last lap on the main straight. After the Grand Prix finished, Hamilton and Verstappen were tied with 369.5 points in the Drivers Championship, leading to a showdown on Abu Dhabi.
The Saudi Arabian GP was highly praised for it's dramatic debut in the 2021 season. Many hoped it would be the same for the 2022 season and onwards. During the 2022 Formula One season, the track was moved up to become the 2nd race of the season in the F1 2022 calendar. During the 2022 Saudi Arabian GP, the race featured a battle between Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen. The two battle it out on the track but, the race was eventually won by Max Verstappen making it his first Grand Prix victory of the season, after previously having a disastrous Bahrain GP. During the 2024 Bahrain GP, a young F2 drive, Oliver Bearman, made his debut during the 2024 Saudi Arabian GP. He filled in for Ferrari's Carlos Sainz due to him having to go through his Appendex during the weekend. Bearman had an amazing race weekend, as he managed to finish P7 and scored points for Ferrari. A great position for him and a impressive debut to F1. Bearman will eventually become a full time F1 driver during the 2025 season, as he signed a contract to drive for Haas in the 2025 Season.

Overall, the Saudi Arabian GP has been quite a success for Formula One. It has been able to show off amazing action on the track. The circuit has already made a lot of memorable moments and continues to deliver more. However around the year 2027, F1 plans to switch the location of the Saudi Arabian GP. A new circuit being constructed in the city of Qiddiya, where the track will be constructed on top of the city. The circuit would be one of the largest ones yet, containing a 108-metre tall ramp. The new circuit promises to host more dramatic races, when F1 races at the track around 2027. But the Jeddah Corniche Circuit will never be forgotten, and will always remain as a fan-favorite.
